The climate of Guatemala varies more by altitude than by season. The coastal lowlands are always hot say 90 degrees during the day. The high mountains, places such as Todos Santos, can be near freezing at night.
.
Around Lake Atitlán, the town of Sololá which is situated on a cliff high over the lake can be 10 or 20 degrees colder than the towns such as San Pedro la Laguna which are at lake level. Although at times it gets cold in the night, the climate in San Pedro is generally mild. Cool in the morning and evening, but the temperature usually reaches 80 to 85 degrees between 11:00am and 3:00pm. I usually swim every day in the lake at 6:00am. I hate to be cold so if it was cold I would not do it. It is refreshing.
.
During most days one can get by wearing shorts and a T-shirt. It feels cold when the day is windy (the locals say "mucho aire" and believe you can get sick swallowing too much air. There may be some truth to this because  much dust is picked up by the wind, however now most streets in San Pedro are paved.)
.
. What I (as a man) bring:
  • 5 T shirts (2 or 3 to give away when I leave)
  • 3 pants, (2 light, 1 heavy such as levi's)
  • 3 long sleeve shirts (1 flannel, 2 light summer)
  • 1 short sleeve shirt
  • 1 sweater vest or sweater
  • 1 medium to light jacket
  • 5 pairs of socks
  • 5 underwear shorts
  • 1 pair of shoes I can climb in.

If I need something else I buy it. Too often I have had to mail back stuff which I didn't want to carry around. If it gets too cold at night for me I buy one of the nice wool blankets they weave. They are always nice to have at home or to give as presents. I have not had to buy a blanket for the last several years. If one time of year is cold it is likely to be in December or January.

.
The rainy season begins in May and continues until September. There is a short break in July. The rain is usually in the afternoon or at night and is hard. The streets can become temporary rivers. The sun will be out in the morning. I love the rain. It is an event and the clouds around the mountains are constantly changing and at their most spectacular. Since most of the streets of San Pedro are paved there is less of a mud problem than before, but if you cross the lake to Santiago Atitlán you will find few paved streets. If you go during the rainy season you will be compensated by the beautiful flowers, and Casa Rosario has the among most spectacular gardens in town.
