All photographs on this page were taken in and from the Casa Rosario garden. The photo on the left, which shows the dramatic play between the mountains and the clouds that often occurs around Lake Atitlán, was taken shortly after the garden opened in 2003, and looks down from the garden on a neighboring cornfield. At that point the lake was receding, but in 2011 the lake started rising again (this happens regularly in forty or fifty year cycles), and the cornfield now is an inlet of the lake. The photograph (below/right) shows the garden in 2013.

The Casa Rosario garden is on the shore of Lake Atitlán, in a small strip of farmland below the town of San Pedro la Laguna. There students learn Spanish in a natural and quiet setting. Individual cabañas protect the student and teacher from the sun and the rain. Unless requested otherwise, all classes are one on one. There is always time  to ask a question to help understand a word or point of grammar. Since your progress is not being compared to anyone else, you advance at your own pace. If you are a slower student, you do not need to worry about falling behind the rest of the class. Every morning and afternoon Casa Rosario provides tamalitos and fresh fruit such as pineapple and watermelon for a short break. Sometimes the fruit comes from the trees planted in the garden by Samuel and Vicente.

The three photos above show the lake at the 2013 level. The concrete platform (above right) is the roof of the structure (bathroom) also visible in the photo on the right. The stairs beside the structure now provide an entrance into the lake (middle photo above). The two photos (below left) show the 2010 level of the garden lake shore. The lake has risen about a meter and a half since then destroying many houses that were built on low lying land near the shore.
